Answer

What support is available for essay writing?

Essay writing, and academic writing more broadly, is an essential part of most degree programmes. It will involve developing a new set of skills, which you will continue to hone through practice, feedback and guidance.

Much of what you will learn about this topic will be through your course, in the form of lectures, examples, feedback and discussions with your module leaders. However, there is additional support available through the Centre for Academic Achievement

Librarians

  • Literature searching (including systematic reviews)
  • Using subject-specific databases
  • Referencing and bibliographic software

Study help

  • Planning and time management
  • How to write a literature review
  • Critical writing
  • Academic writing support including structure and writing style
  • Guidance on editing and proofreading (we cannot proofread work for you, but can advise on strategies to improve your proofreading skills)

The Centre for Academic Achievement also runs workshops on dissertations in term 1 and term 2.

If English is not your first language, there is support available through the English Language Teaching Unit. Keep an eye out for their academic writing lecture series.
