Some ebooks from EBSCOhost can only be downloaded using the Thorium Reader app. Follow the instructions below to install the app and download books to your chosen device.

Download the app

We recommend that you download ebooks for offline reading onto personal devices. The Thorium Reader app is not available on university-managed student devices.

To download the app onto a personal device:

If you are using a university-managed staff device:

  • Go to the Software Centre
  • Find and install the Thorium app

Create a MyEBSCO account

To download full ebooks from EBSCOhost, you will need a MyEBSCO personal account.

  1. Go to EBSCOhost.
  2. To create an account, go to MyEBSCO at the top right of the screen.
  3. Click Create an Account.
  4. Enter the details for your account.
  5. Click Create Account.

View ebooks in the app

When you have identified an ebook to download from EBSCOhost:

  1. Open the ebook in the online viewer by clicking Access Now.
  2. Select the Download symbol in the top right of the screen.
  3. Select Full ebook.
  4. Sign in to your MyEBSCO account, if you have not already done so.
  5. Select your desired format.
  6. Copy the passphrase.
  7. Click Download.
  8. Open the downloaded file (you can find the file in either your browser or device downloads folder).
  9. The file will automatically open in the Thorium Reader.
  10. In the window that appears, paste the passphrase you copied in Step 6.
  11. Click Open.

You may download the app onto as many devices as you wish. However, each ebook you download can only be viewed on up to 6 devices simultaneously.

How do I find the passphrase?

Each ebook download will have its own unique passphrase.

I would like to download an ebook to one device... you will not need to re-enter the passphrase each time you open the ebook on the same device.

I would like to download an ebook to multiple devices... if you wish to download the same ebook to multiple devices, you will need to re-enter the passphrase. Make a note of the passphrase, or generate a new passphrase by returning to the download page for the ebook on EBSCOhost.
