Q. How do I download ebooks?

Many of the Library's ebooks can be downloaded for offline reading. However, some publishers restrict how much of an ebook can be downloaded. Restrictions may mean that: 

• You cannot download a full copy of the book
• You can only download a limited amount of the book (for example, one chapter or a percentage of the total pages)

 Any restrictions will generally be made clear on the ebook platform. For example:

While many ebooks can be downloaded and read using any PDF or EPUB reader, some ebook platforms require the use of a specialist reader. Often this will be Adobe Digital Editions. How do I use Adobe Digital Editions?

We recommend that you download ebooks for offline reading onto personal devices. Adobe Digital Editions is not available on university-managed student devices.

To download Adobe Digital Editions onto a personal device:

• Go to the Adobe Digital Editions download page
• Install Adobe Digital Editions.

 If you are using a university-managed staff device:

• Go to the Software Center.
• Find and install Adobe Digital Editions.

Downloading ebooks

Once you have identified an ebook you wish to download: 

1. Download the book from the ebook platform.
2. The file will appear in your device's downloads folder.
3. Open the file. It should automatically open in Adobe Digital Editions. If it does not open automatically:
   1. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
   2. Select File.
   3. Select Add to Library.
   4. Find the downloaded file and click Open. 
4. If it is your first time using the software, you will be prompted to authorise Adobe Digital Editions.  

If you don't need to read your downloaded ebooks on multiple devices: 

1. Tick 'I want to authorize my computer without an ID' and click Next. This will enable you to continue without logging in. 
2. The downloaded ebook will open in Adobe Digital Editions. 

If you do wish to be able to read downloaded ebooks on multiple devices: 

1. Click Create a Adobe ID. 
2. Follow the instructions to create a ByteBooks account. 
3. Enter your ByteBooks ID and ByteBooks password in Adobe Digital Editions and click Authorize.
4. Once your PC is authorised, the downloaded ebook will open.

Each time you use Adobe Digital Editions on a new device, you will be prompted to authorise the software. You may authorise up to 6 devices.

I am seeing an error when I try to authorise

From the 23rd June 2026, Adobe Digital Editions can only be authorised using a ByteBooks account. This means you will see an error message if you try to authorise Adobe Digital Editions on a new device using an Adobe account. Devices authorised with an Adobe account before this date are unaffected.

To fix this issue:

1. Go to the ByteBooks transition help page.
2. Select Create Your ByteBooks Account.
3. Enter your details. To link existing ebook downloads from your Adobe account, make sure you use the same email address you used to create your Adobe ID, and tick 'I have an existing Adobe account to migrate'.
4. Click Create Account & Verify.
5. You will a receive an OTP (One Time Password) to your email address. Enter this into 'Enter the OTP sent to mail' field and click Verify Email ID.
6. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
7. When prompted to authorise, enter your ByteBooks ID and ByteBooks password.
8. Click Authorise.
9. If you have existing ebook downloads, these may appear or automatically or you may need to redownload them.
